Washington Contemporary Ballet School offers a diverse curriculum. While our core function is to provide Classical Ballet training, our students also receive the highest caliber of education in Jazz, Tap, Flamenco and Modern Dance

Our instructors come from varied backgrounds and offer diversity through their own experience and training.  Of equal importance is the extraordinary choreography that is taught to our students which enables them to grow as artists and develop a stronger appreciation for their art.

Please Welcome our New Director, Nathan Cook!

The Washington Contemporary Ballet Board of Directors is proud to announce the appointment of Nathan Cook as our new Director. Many of you may be familiar with him as Ballet Master at WCB for the most recent dance year and many years as  a guest performer. During our selection process, Mr. Cook defined his hopes for WCB in this way, "I want to take WCB's ballet training and performing programs back to our roots. I've been reflecting upon all of the solid, classical ballet instruction and traditions which the late Kay Englert, WCB's founder, established during her years as director. I'd like to take the best elements of her teaching ideals and renew our commitment that each individual enrolled at WCB will receive the highest  level of training and the most innovative dance performance opportunities possible. I want to move WCB forward and secure our position as the dance school of choice for students and parents who desire inspired, exceptional training. I envision studios filled with dancers fully prepared to reach out and grab their dance future!" The WCB Board of Directors couldn't agree more and are committed to help him achieve those goals. Please take a moment to review the highlights of Mr. Cook's career, so far.

Nathan Cook has studied dance for more than sixteen years including classical ballet, contemporary ballet, tap, jazz, modern and flamenco. He received his training from Spectrum Dance Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Washington Contemporary Ballet. Mr. Cook is sought after in the Pacific Northwest area as a guest dancer and instructor. His most recent position as Ballet Master for WCB included teaching classes, conducting rehearsals and creating choreography for the company. He has been on faculty at other area dance schools including Auburn Dance Academy and Studio West Dance Academy.

As a professional dancer and guest artist, Mr. Cook has worked for dance companies such as Ballet Bellevue and Studio West Dance Academy. At Ballet Bellevue he worked with many outstanding choreographers including Adam Miller, Jennifer Porter, and Stanko Milov, all former PNB company dancers. He was commissioned by the Universal Language Project to choreograph and perform several works. Major roles danced by Mr. Cook include Peter Pan, Nutcracker Prince, Cavalier, Prince Charming, Prince Ivan and Nick Bottom, to name a few.

Mr. Cook attended Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Summer Intensive on full merit scholarship for four summers. He also studied with The Academy at Spectrum Dance Theatre on scholarship. Over the years, he has studied under notable directors and instructors at Spectrum including Donald Byrd, Director, Eva Stone, Vicki Pulkinen (former PNB teacher who created the curriculum used by the PNB School) and Joel Meyers. At PNB he trained with Peter Boal, Director, Stanko Milov, Bruce Wells, Sonja Dawkins and Timothy Lynch. He also trained with Stephanie Wood (Studio West Dance Academy), Josie Johnson (Ballet NW), Danielle Wilkins (DASS), Kay Englert (WCB) and Ken Kaiser (WCB).

Mr. Cook’s dedication to the art of dance and strong focus on classical ballet, discipline and technique was a significant factor in selecting him as WCB’s director. In working with world renowned directors, choreographers and instructors, Mr. Cook brings valuable dance and performing experience to Washington Contemporary Ballet. Please join the board in welcoming our new director. We look forward to an exciting year!
